  • What is Explorer Scouting?

(taken from scoutbase.org.uk)

  • Explorer Scouts are young people, usually aged between 14 and 18 years old. They make up the fourth Section of the Scouting family. There are many types of Explorer Scout Units, some may be linked to your local Scout Group, others may be based around different activities.
  • Not all Units meet each week, because you will often be out and about at weekends or in the holidays doing activities. There will be times when you will be busy doing other things such as exams, and being an Explorer Scout will have to fit around these.
  • As an Explorer Scout, you will get the chance to work with other Explorer Scouts in your District, not just your Unit. By doing this, you will get the chance to do many more activities, not just the ones your Unit organises.
  • About Us

  •

Jackal Explorer Scout Unit is currently the largest Explorer Scout Unit in the district of South Ribble. We meet on Wednesday nights between 7pm and 9pm at 6th Penwortham Scout HQ located on Cop Lane, Penwortham.

    Facilities

We currently share the Scout hut belonging to 6th Penwortham. The hut provides a large hall, male and female toilets, kitchen, communal room and storage area. With the idea of 'Explorer Scouts' being relatively new, much of our equipment is borrowed from the Scout group, however we do own several backpacking tents, stoves and other bits and bobs which have been purchased with the aid of grant money. We also have access to the groups minibus and trailers.

    Programme

A copy of our programme can be found in the 'download' section of the website.

Our programme is devised by our executive committee under the guidance of the Jackal leadership team.

    Camps

We are an active group and try to plan a number of different types of camp throughout the year. Such camps include Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, service team camps and international camps. We annually plan a service team camp to Great Tower Scout Camp Site, located by Windermere where we offer our services to the camp site in return for free accommodation. The camp takes place every December where our excellent cooking team provide a full Christmas dinner followed by an evening of games and entertainment.

    International

Austria plays host to our 7 day skiing experience in February 2010. Previously, we have run a camp to Jersey and had members of the group participating in 'Red Rose' camps to Austria and Canada as well as at West Lancashire Scouts' own campsites (Waddecar and Great Tower), here in the UK. As you can imagine, sending a large amount of people abroad can be very costly. We successfully fundraised a significant amount of money towards our Jersey trip in 2006 and are hoping to achieve the same if not better this year.
